Cleveland Ballet 1981-82 Season; Leads With "Coppelia"
Cleveland Ballet will produce its second full-length ballet "Coppelia," with choreography by Dennis Nahat, in its 1981-82 season. The ballet will run from October 16 through October 25 at the Hanna
Theatre in Cleveland's Playhouse Square.
The production is being brought to life with the help of a $150,000 grant from The Standard Oil Company (Sohio).
"Coppelia," with music by Leo Delibes, and based on a fairy tale by E.T.A. Hoffman, is about a beautiful doll that comes to life. It is ballet's most famous comedy-love story and a family oriented ballet just like "The Nutcracker."
Just as "Giselle" is ballet's great tragedy, "Coppelia" is ballet's great comedy. It is romance, fantasy and comedy all rolled into one.
Its story set in a middle European country, "Coppelia" is resplendent with ethnic flavors and dances, czardas and mazurkas, and other elements of the Slavic and Germanic traditions.
"Coppelia," which premiered in 1870, tells the story of the beautiful Swanhilda and of her love for Franz, a high spirited good looking young peasant boy and of his foolish fascination with the doll, Coppelia.
It is also the story of Dr. Coppelius, the town's most mysterious citizen, and his fabulous life-like dolls, including a chinaman in richly embroidered robes, a one-man band resplendent in parade dress, and a Harlequin in his diamond patched costume. Coppelia however, is the most precious of all the dolls, perfect in every detail.
"Coppelia," will be the second full-length ballet in Cleveland
Ballet's repertory, the first being "The Nutcracker," which made its debut December 12, 1979.
Over 125 costumes have been designed for the production by David Guthrie at a cost of $130,000. In addition to this exciting new production, Cleveland Ballet's fall season will include revivals of "Rodeo," Agnes de Mille's ballet of the American southwest, along with George Balanchine's lush, romantic "Serenade," Dennis Nahat's "Contra Concerti," and a new pas de deux by Nahat to an original score by Stanley Sussman. This repertory will run at the Hanna Theatre October 27-November 1.
Also on board once again will be the Ohio Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dwight Oltman.
Weeknight performances start at 8, weekends at 8:30, and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m., along with a special performance at 8 p.m., Sunday, October 25. Tickets are priced at $18, $16, $14, $12, $10, and $7 (subtract $1 for Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday nights, and Saturday matinees). Group rates are available.
Tickets may be obtained by calling 621-3634 or by visiting the Ballet box office at One Playhouse Square, Suite 330.
